Data is available for vegetables produced in field, undercover and for processing. The aggregate figure provides a total for those vegetables where the data separates out the three above.
Vegetable growers usually produce more than one vegetable so that a grower will be counted several times across the range of vegetables.
The value of each vegetable and the average price is calculated from the production estimates multiplied by prices at the first point of sale.
The deferred option for data is that collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in the annual vegetable collection. Data from this collection is collated at the national, state and statistical division level. Every five years this is done by Census and in the intervening years by Survey using standard statistical techniques.
The data from Census collections is likely to be more accurate than that from Survey collections. Data at the national level and for larger vegetable crops are likely to be more accurate than at the statistical division and for smaller vegetable crops.
Where the industry believes it has more accurate data this is included and the source dually noted.
The most recent detailed information is for 2008/09. Only limited data is available on carrots, mushrooms, onions, potatoes and tomatoes for 2009/10.
